2015 Pursuit of Excellence Award

Together with the Franklin family, CEV Multimedia awarded two outstanding New Mexico students with the Jerry Franklin “Pursuit of Excellence” Scholarship. In memory of the long-time New Mexico agricultural education instructor and former CEV employee, recipients are chosen by Gordon W. Davis, founder and chairman of CEV Multimedia, and Eddie Puckett, retired agriculture instructor and current CTE Curriculum Consultant for CEV Multimedia.

This year, the proud recipients of the $500 scholarships are Kevyn Thompson of Texico High School and Kynzi Creighton of Elida High School. Both Thompson and Creighton are well-rounded young ladies who are actively involved in their local FFA chapters, members of the National Honor Society and participate on athletic teams.

Congratulations Kevyn

Kevyn Thompson has served in multiple FFA offices including Greenhand Sentinel, Greenhand President and Chapter Treasurer. She has won multiple awards while competing in Career Development Events (CDE), the Agriscience Fair and public speaking contests. A few of her many achievements include:

  • Member of the 2015 State Champion Poultry Judging Team, placing 2nd high point individual
  • Member of the 2014 State Champion Dairy Cattle Judging Team, placing 10th high point individual
  • 2014 National Gold Emblem Agriscience Fair Winner – Division IV Botany
  • Two-time New Mexico State Fair Age Division Champion Lamb Showman

Thompson says her experiences in FFA have been irreplaceable: “I have learned a lot about sportsmanship, how to be modest in winning and generous in defeat.” Through her Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program, Thompson manages and operates a small flock of club lamb ewes and shows eight to 10 market lambs a year at various shows across the country. According to Thompson, working to achieve success in the show ring has taught her invaluable lessons about work ethic, self-discipline and commitment.

Jerry Franklin was a very significant part of Thompson’s show career. “It was because of him I started showing goats, and he also had a way of encouraging me and motivating me to do my best in the show ring. He will always be a cherished part of my memories of the show ring,” Thompson said.

Outside of FFA, Thompson leads small groups and team devotionals for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is responsible for several community service projects for the National Honor Society and volunteers with her church’s childcare program. She also participates in track and basketball for Texico High School. In 2015, her basketball team won the class 3A state basketball championship.

Congratulations Kynzi

Kynzi Creighton currently serves as the New Mexico FFA State Vice President and the District IV President.  The ultimate competitor, Creighton has received multiple awards while competing in Career Development Events (CDE) and with her Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects.  Some of her many accomplishments include:

  • Member of the 2015 State Champion Livestock Judging Team, placing 1st high point individual
  • 2014 State FFA Prepared Public Speaking Champion
  • 2013 State FFA Creed Speaking Champion
  • Two-time winner of the New Mexico State Fair Leon H. Harms Award

Being an active member of the FFA is a long-standing tradition in Creighton’s family. Her parents, both former members of the Elida FFA chapter, have always encouraged Creighton to pursue excellence in all that she does. “I have always had a passion for competition and a drive to win,” Creighton said.

Exhibiting numerous grand and reserve champion animals throughout her career, Creighton has gained more than just trophies through her SAE programs.  “I have learned how to win and be humble, lose and be gracious and make the best out of every situation,” Creighton said.

Creighton’s other extra-curricular activities include serving as prayer leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and performing community service projects for the National Honor Society.  An outstanding athlete, Creighton is also a member of the varsity volleyball, basketball and track teams at Elida High School. Her basketball and volleyball teams are the reigning four-time class 1A state champions.

In Honor of Jerry Franklin

The Jerry Franklin “Pursuit of Excellence” Scholarship was established by CEV Multimedia to perpetuate the memory of the former longtime successful agriculture teacher, basketball coach, FFA advisor, farmer, mentor, and CEV representative. Franklin taught for 27 years at several high schools in New Mexico, and remains a highly respected figure among the state’s agricultural circle. One of his greatest passions was seeing students excel, as he was a great mentor to young people in the community as well as throughout the state of New Mexico.

Recipients of this award must be a high school senior from New Mexico, an FFA member and must show market lambs and/or goats.
